Get to know the OCC family’s newest member, Assistant Executive Director Caroline Paterno!

Recently, Caroline sat down with Hilary Clark to discuss Caroline’s favorite things, as well as the exciting things she sees on the horizon.

What drew you to Ossining Children’s Center and to early childhood education?

I was drawn to Ossining Children’s Center because of its reputation for serving its community with compassion and distinction. I saw an opportunity to join an organization that already has a strong foundation and contribute my experience in early childhood education, staff development, and program operations. Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about creating environments where children grow and thrive, teachers feel supported, and families feel like true partners. OCC’s commitment to those principles made it feel like the right place for me to grow professionally while also making a meaningful impact.

What are you most excited to focus on in your first year at OCC?

I am excited to build on the strong foundation that already exists here at Ossining Children’s Center. My focus during the first year will be on strengthening staff support and communication, fostering meaningful partnerships with families, and ensuring our educational programs continue to provide high-quality, developmentally appropriate experiences for each child. I also look forward to improving systems and processes to help make our center run more efficiently all while maintaining the warm, nurturing environment OCC is known for.

What is a hobby or interest that brings you joy outside of OCC?

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors. I also love spending quality time with my family and friends, whether we’re exploring somewhere new or simply enjoying time together. I also have a creative side and I enjoy projects that allow me to make or design something. These activities help me relax, stay inspired, and bring a fresh energy to all I do.

Do you have a favorite children’s book or activity you love doing with children?

The Giving Tree has always been one of my favorite books because it reminds me of the importance of kindness, generosity, and unconditional love. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate the message about giving to others while also recognizing the importance of gratitude and caring for the people who love and support us. I love how this simple children’s book can help start conversations about empathy, relationships, and the many different ways we show love and support to one another. This book has stayed with me over the years because its message is timeless and continues to have meaning in both my personal life and my work with children and families.

I love doing open-ended art activities with children because it allows each child to express their creativity in their own unique way. There is no right or wrong answer, which gives children the confidence to explore, experiment, and make their own choices. Most of all I love watching the pride children feel when they create something that is entirely their own. Their excitement, confidence, and sense of accomplishment remind me that the process of creating is often more important than the final product.

What is one fun fact about me that might surprise people?

One of my favorite TV shows is Little House on the Prairie. I have been watching it since it first aired when I was a child. The show reminds me of the importance of family, kindness, and community. The stories focus on helping others, working through challenges together, and appreciating the simple things in life. It is set during a much simpler time which is something I crave at times living in this fast-paced and electronic time. I enjoy how the show teaches meaningful life lessons about compassion, resilience, honesty, and perseverance. As someone who works with children and families, those values really resonate with me. It’s a comforting show that feels wholesome, uplifting, and timeless, and it’s one I can watch again and again.

One more fact about me is that I don’t like chocolate! It’s usually the first thing that surprises people about me.
